25th February 2003

I never liked living alone espcially in this awful place.

Today is another national holiday it is Liberation Day and commemorates the liberation of Kuwait from Iraqi occupation in the last Gulf War. One of the local gossip pieces was that Saddam was waiting for today to attack Kuwait but as you can see from the picture below (the first) he wouldn’t be able to find the place. Yes another dust storm. So the war is now deferred until the weather is better. I would hate to be one of those young soldiers out in the desert right now. It doesn’t matter what you do the dust comes in and covers everything.

We spent yesterday finishing the packing and the lot goes in a container on the 27th and straight to the wharf. We are anxious to get it out of the country so that it doesn’t get stolen if there is trouble. I have beem told that the looters are a big problem.

A little humour for those of you who appreciate my view of things, I was sitting playing one of my computer games (war and destruction) and there was a huge explosion, It sounded like the front door had been blown off it’s hinges. Well I just sat still waiting for the rest of the noise of bandits running down the hallway shouting and firing their guns but nothing. After a respectable 5 or so minutes I went to look what had happened and discovered that one of my home made bottles of Apple Cider had exploded destroying several other bottles of my finest home made hooch.

I am still alive but most of my stock for the war has gone even the home made Jack Daniels I was bringing home to show off to the neighbours. My friend Paul who was here during the las war told me that you need lots of water, petrol and good Scotch for a war. I am short on the latter.

The second photo is for Alice and is of the baby pidgeon in the base of the balcony tree (click here to see another photo of the tree). He is hunkered down with his new feathers trying to escape the dust, his lousy parents simply took off and left him with the weather. I spent about an hour last night cleaning the pidgeon droppings off the balcony. What a waste of time.

On the work front we have had an application from a guy from the US who wants to relocate to Kuwait and is a senior franchise professional. I asked him on the phone yesterday if he had been watching CNN recently. He simply laughed. I am not sure what that means but I think he may have something he is running away from.. “I cant wait to get over there with you guys and get my teeth into the challenges”. Oh well no longer my problem.

You may notice that Fosters (FGL) shares have dropped from $4.64 at Xmas (whilst I was home) to $4.25 this week, so I have taken a further position on the basis that once word is out that I am returning the stock should recover again. Their recorded profit of $360 million for the last quarter was a shock I cant remember those kind of stock levels at Xmas in Burleigh but hey who was counting anyway. It must be noted that in the December quarter they had a 46% increase in revenues from there overseas sales, that must have been the Dubai trip and the Bahrain trip. It makes me feel warm inside to be contributing so much.

Well have to go and get some breakfast. Yes Maccas healthy morning starter.

Hope to see you all soon and please write I miss you all. Just click here it is easy.
